What is an altcoin? Altcoins explained
Altcoin is a combination of the words “alt” (alternative) and “coin” (cryptocurrency), implying that all coins other than Bitcoin are altcoins. After the global financial meltdown of 2008-09, Bitcoin was the crypto that introduced blockchain-based technology to the world.
They generally position themselves as better alternatives to Bitcoin in terms of potential return.
Most altcoins are attempting to address any perceived shortcomings of Bitcoin by developing a competitive edge in newer versions.
What’s the difference between Bitcoin and altcoins?
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to appear in 2009. All those other coins and tokens are referred to as alternative coins or altcoins because Bitcoin is the “original” crypto. Some in the crypto world consider Ethereum to be one of the original coins, referring to all coins other than Bitcoin and Ethereum as altcoins.
Altcoins differentiate themselves from Bitcoins by broadening their capabilities and filling the gaps left by Bitcoin’s utility.
The Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus algorithm powers the Bitcoin blockchain. As a result, the blockchain is entirely reliant on computational power. At first, the computation power required to mine a block was insignificant. However, due to its increasing popularity, it grew exponentially over time.
Some consider this to be a major issue for the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem. New consensus algorithms have been released to address the issue. Proof of Stake, Delegated Proof of Stake, Proof-of-Authority, and others were among them. PoS addressed the energy and computational issues by requiring nodes to stake coins in order to take part in the consensus.
How do I buy altcoins?
The steps for purchasing cryptocurrencies on multiple platforms could differ slightly, but they are mostly similar and straightforward.
Phase 1: Determine a percentage of the investment’s portfolio allocation.
Many altcoins are still in the testing stage, while many other teams had already launched their coins only to disappear after dropping their apportioned sums on the market. As a result, a significant number of blockchain projects fail relatively quickly. Thus, remember to do your due diligence process before investing in any altcoin. While they may offer more significant returns, the risks associated with holding altcoins is greater compared to holding Bitcoin.
Stage 2: Look for the best potential coins.
Investors can choose from thousands of altcoins. The suitability of one for investment is determined by a number of factors, including your needs and preferences.
A few important questions to ask before investing in alt-cryptocurrencies:
- Is there any information about individuals who have earlier made money with the coin?
2. Is the cryptocurrency’s official website still operational? Do they have a solid whitepaper? Is their team anonymous or is it public?
3. How big is the community that supports the project?
4. Is there enough liquidity on the market to rationalize a purchase?
Phase 3: Convert fiat currency to cryptocurrency.
Most exchanges have fiat on-ramp systems. Investors must purchase fiat-backed cryptocurrencies (stablecoins) and then exchange them for altcoins on the swap. Croinex, for instance, has fiat on-ramping so moving from the fiat world to the crypto world is easy.
Most Popular Altcoins in 2023
Ethereum (ETH) – With the introduction of the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade, which will enhance its speed, scalability, and security, Ethereum is likely to remain a significant player in the cryptocurrency space.
Binance Coin (BNB) is still one of the most important altcoins on the market and one of the top cryptocurrencies by market cap. Binance, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, invented the BNB token to allow investors to receive trading fee discounts and other platform benefits.
Cardano (ADA) has become a major challenger to Ethereum’s supremacy of the blockchain market, ranking among the top ten most valuable crypto assets. This third-generation blockchain was created to address problems with both Bitcoin and Ethereum, including scalability and security.
Polkadot (DOT) – Polkadot is a blockchain platform that allows different blockchains to communicate with each other, making it a promising project for the interoperability of different blockchain networks.
Solana entered the ranks of Ethereum competing products after spotting opportunities to compete with them at their own game, and they have flourished ever since. Another third-generation coin, the Solana blockchain focuses on providing fast transaction velocities and simple scalability remedies.
Dogecoin (DOGE) – Although initially created as a joke, Dogecoin has gained immense popularity due to endorsements from high-profile individuals like Elon Musk and its adoption as a payment method by some businesses.
What is altcoin season?
Altcoin season is a period during which non-BTC cryptos, defined as altcoins, outperform BTC.
We are all aware that Bitcoin, the world’s most valuable digital asset by market cap, is widely traded around the world. In fact, it controls such a large portion of cryptocurrency trading volume that there exists a well-known measurement that compares Bitcoin to non-BTC cryptocurrencies. This metric, appropriately named ‘Bitcoin dominance,’ is defined as the ratio of Bitcoin’s market cap to the remaining portion of the crypto market.
While Bitcoin used to have near-complete dominance, the existence and popularization of altcoins have resulted in a decline in Bitcoin’s dominance. When multiple altcoins reach a substantial market cap that surpasses Bitcoin’s market cap, it may indicate the beginning of an altcoin season.
Throughout an altcoin period, altcoins typically outperform Bitcoin, causing Bitcoin to lose market dominance. As a result, seasoned investors and traders with diverse portfolios pay attention to altcoin seasons and modify their portfolios correspondingly.
